1.To know God’s truth
The key to understanding is CONTEXT – grammatical, historical, literal, cultural context.
Bible passages have one meaning.
- God’s truth is absolute, not relative.
- Don’t hear what you want to hear. (2 Timothy 4:3)!
- Take the simple, literal, plain meaning unless the context indicates otherwise.
- Let Scripture interpret Scripture (Acts 17:11)
Engage – ask good questions!
2.To trust God’s character
Scripture is personal – Jesus is the message of the entire Bible. (John 5:39, 46; Luke 24:27, 44)
We get to see God’s glory and admire His beauty in His Word! (Exodus 33:18, 2 Corinthians 3:18)
Beholding God’s character moves us to trust Him!
Engage – look for God’s beautiful character!
3.To practice God’s will
The Bible is not written to us, but it is written for us. (Romans 15:4)
Examine your heart to let God’s Word rebuke and correct you:
- Doing God’s will is rooted in trusting Jesus. (John 6:29)
- Doing God’s will is not just being busy! (Luke 10:38-41)
- Doing God’s will must involve action! (James 1:22-25)
