Equal With the Father (John 5:18-47)
Need proper understanding of Jesus:
- To properly interpret Scripture (39–40)
- To genuinely love God (42)
- To authentically honor God (44, 23)
- To avoid judgment (25, 27)
- To receive life (24)
Honor Jesus as Almighty God!
1. The Father gave the Son works
The Father is accomplishing His will through Jesus (John 5:19, 36)!
The Father works for Jesus’ glory. (Colossians 1:18, Philippians 2:9–11)
The very reason we are able to rest is because God is working!
2. The Father gave the Son authority
Jesus is the “Son of Man” (5:27), referring to divine power and authority (Daniel 7:13–14).
Jesus has the authority to give life and the authority to judge.
This life or judgment is not only future (5:29), but present (5:24)!
3. The Father gave the Son testimony
The Father validates Jesus through several witnesses (5:37–38)
- Jesus’ works (5:36)
- John the Baptist (5:33–35)
- All of Scripture (5:39–40)
- Moses (5:45–47)
The purpose – Honor the Son (5:23). Hear, believe, have life (5:24)!
