"Five Years from Now" Sermon Discussion
During our midweek Life Groups, we discuss applications of the sermon and pray for one another. Here you can find the discussion questions for our series Five Years from Now, where we are aspiring to pursue God's best for our lives and our church in the coming years!
These questions coordinate with our sermon series from January to February 2023: "Five Years from Now."
- What impressions, applications, or questions do you have from this sermon or passage?
- What do you think is God’s best for your life? What is God’s best for our church? Is this attainable (3:12)?
- What stirs you up, gets you excited, motivates you, and drives you on a daily basis (3:14)?
- What wrong appetites cause danger of competing with a godly hunger (3:19)? How do these creep into the lives of believers?
- How does a heavenly citizenship change our perspective and reorient our lives (3:20)? How can you put on this perspective every day this week?
- How can we lean into one another in our church family with a love and longing that cares for this family like a joy and crown (4:1)?
- What impressions, applications, or questions do you have from this sermon or passage?
- How might you typically finish the sentence: “I would be happy if ____________________”?
- Do you notice any correlating patterns between your time spent in Scripture and your happiness (1:2)? Why might that be?
- How can you walk among proper influence so that you can influence sinners rather than be influenced by them (1:1)?
- The wind is a powerful force (1:4, James 1:6)! How can we plant ourselves in God’s way (1:3), so that we are not driven away like chaff?
- What does this prosperity look like (1:3)? How do we aim for this, and how does God accomplish this in and through us?
- What impressions, applications, or questions do you have from this sermon or passage?
- What regrets do you carry that you would do differently in your younger days (12:1)? What about in the last five years?
- How do we live with meaning, even as we face inevitable darkness (11:8)?
- What do the harsh effects of aging reveal to us about the human condition (12:1-7)?
- How can we make the most of the moments right now (11:9, 12:1), while always living in view of eternity (12:13)?
- How could you share gospel hope with someone from the book of Ecclesiastes? How can you cling to this hope personally and practically?
- What impressions, applications, or questions do you have from this sermon or passage?
- How many times per week, per day even, do you wrestle with “What if” questions? Are you prepared to follow God’s will, “even if” (3:18)?
- How can we be certain of God’s will so that we can resolve to follow Him when we face the “even if” (3:18)?
- Why is it so much easier to acknowledge God in the moment (2:47), than to give Him your life (3:1)?
- Consider the world’s readiness to worship idols (3:7)! God will exalt Jesus (Philippians 2:9-11) so that the world worships Him (Revelation 7:9)! How will you be used by God as a testimony of His worth?
- Reflect on a time you faced a fiery trial in your life. Were you faithfully resolved? Or did you turn back? What would you do different?
- What impressions, applications, or questions do you have from this sermon or passage?
- Have you ever felt called to ministry? How is this call objective more than subjective? How is this call for all believers, rather than just pastors?
- What ministry has God called you to? What are your passions and gifts? How are you offering those to God for Him to use you?
- Why do we get “itchy ears” (4:3)? What are some areas in which it is harder to receive truth? How do we guard against this?
- What steps are you taking to stay ready (4:2) and sober (4:5) as you serve the Lord?
- What obstacles are in front of you that may hinder or divert you from finishing well (4:7)? How can you continue to give yourself wholeheartedly?
- What impressions, applications, or questions do you have from this sermon or passage?
- God wants us to be disciples making disciples, to pass the baton (2:2)! Who are you investing in? Who could you invest in?
- Which of these illustrative roles do you best identify with (2:3-6)? Which challenges you most? How does God’s grace strengthen you for this (2:1)?
- In His grace, God invites us to suffer well (2:3). Are you willing to accept that call? How can you please God in your suffering (2:4)?
- Does God care about rules (2:5)? How can we live life by God’s guidelines and still enjoy our mission?
- Are you dedicating your hard work to the right purpose (2:6)? What “firstfruits” are you looking to reap in your life?
- What impressions, applications, or questions do you have from this sermon or passage?
- How can we better understand God’s will in light of 1 Thessalonians (5:18, 4:3)?
- Paul has commended the Thessalonians for much of these exhortations already (1:2-10). Why are exhortations needed for things we’re already doing?
- We are called to step into others’ lives to love and support them (5:14)! Which command in this verse is hardest for you? Why?
- What does it look like practically to always rejoice, pray, and give thanks (5:16-18)? Is this possible? How can we grow in this?
- We depend on God for our sanctification (5:23-24); yet, we are commanded and exhorted to live according to God’s truth (5:11-22). How do these fit together?
