"Good Grief" Sermon Discussion

During our midweek Life Groups, we discuss applications of the sermon and pray for one another. Here you can find the discussion questions for our series on Walking through Loss with Sorrow and Hope.

These questions coordinate with our current sermon series from October-December 2019: "Good Grief."

Each week, we will start the discussion by asking,

What was the hardest part about starting a series on death and grieving? Is this important to talk about?
God views death as an enemy. How does this impact your perspective and worldview?
What do you look forward to most about heaven? What do you anticipate?
How does the reality of hell burden and break you for the unsaved? What is your response?
Are you comfortably making a home in this life? In what ways do you try to avoid pain and seek comfort?

How do you cope when you feel stuck in pain and sorrow? What thoughts and feelings are you tempted with?
Why is it tempting to seek escape and avoid the pain? What are some ways we withdraw or distract ourselves?
Why might the pain have a greater purpose in our lives, and therefore worth the time to feel and process?
How can you pray when you don’t feel like praying? How do you start? What do you say?
How does truth relate to our feelings? How do we both feel our feelings, yet train our feelings according to truth?

What are some of the hardest aspects of continuing life after losing a loved one?
Why are some days a little easier and some days so much harder?
How might worship look differently in the midst of grief? How might it look the same?
We need time to heal and process deep sorrow and pain. Does that excuse us to wrong or unfaithful living?
How can we live with purpose even when we feel crippled with pain and the loss of identity?

Death is painful! Is it worth it to love someone if you might lose them?
In what ways do you struggle with selfishness creeping into your relationships? How does this contradict biblical love described in this passage?
How does the realization that we are stewards of our relationships with the people around us change our perspective and transform our living?
Do you find yourself taking “tomorrow” for granted with people (James 4:13-14)?
How can we steward our relationships well, so to keep current in them without living fearfully?

God’s purpose often involves our pain, yet works for our benefit. How does that offer perspective for times of suffering?
Why would Jesus be angry at death? How does that make you feel?
It’s easy to feel alone in our pain, but our Creator identifies with us and sympathizes with us. How is that comforting?
How can we go to God and find comfort in times of loss, sorrow, and pain?
How can we appreciate Jesus’ sympathy while being sure not to let our feelings steer our lives and decisions?

How do you care for and serve someone who is grieving the loss of a loved one?
What would you want from others if you were grieving? What would help you most?
What are some of the challenges in reaching out and coming alongside someone who is grieving?
How does simply being there, listening, and understanding (rather than offering advice) go a long way?
Are there times when you’re hurting that you just want to be alone? Why? How has being with the church helped you with your struggles?
