"Life in His Name" Sermon Discussion
During our midweek Life Groups, we discuss applications of the sermon and pray for one another. Here you can find the discussion questions for our series on The Gospel of John.
These questions coordinate with our sermon series from December 2019 to April 2021: "Life in His Name."
(Due to the COVID pandemic, Life Groups did not meet from March 2020 through April 2021, so questions do not extend beyond John 5.)
Each week, we will start the discussion by asking,
- What questions or reactions do you have?
- What is one application you will make?
- John wrote to give us greater knowledge, faith, and evangelism for Jesus (John 20:31). In what ways do you hope to grow as we study John together?
- How could this baby in the manger be the eternal God (John 1:1-2)? How does that impact us?
- In what ways do we see the glory of God today (John 1:14)? Are you indifferent to God’s glory, or are you moved with awe and excitement?
- If you have trusted Jesus as your Savior, you are a child of God (John 1:12). Do you take that for granted? How do you live as God’s child each day?
- How have you better understood God’s character and glory through Jesus (John 1:18)?
Listen to the sermon here.
- When you introduce yourself to others, how do you describe or identify yourself? What if you regularly identified yourself in relationship to Jesus (John 1:27)?
- John the Baptist said his purpose was that Jesus might be revealed (John 1:32)? Do you consider this a part of your purpose? How does that show?
- John the Baptist called people to prepare for Jesus’ coming (John 1:23), and then proclaimed that Jesus had arrived (John 1:29). Are you ready for Jesus’ presence in your life?
- We are not worthy of any relationship with Jesus (John 1:27); yet, Jesus calls us into relationship with Him. In what ways can you “walk in a manner worthy” of the Lord (Colossians 1:10)?
- John points to Jesus and says, “Behold!” (“Look!” – John 1:29) In what ways can you look with awe to know Jesus more and live for Him?
Listen to the sermon here.
- How can you communicate the value of Jesus through your words and actions (John 1:35-36)?
- What might people be seeking that may be the access by which we introduce them to Jesus (John 1:38)?
- Did the disciples get training before they told others (John 1:41, 45)? What obstacles keep you from introducing others to Jesus?
- What are some ways that you can open up your life to the lost and be hospitable for the gospel (John 1:38-39)?
- Why do hard questions feel threatening (John 1:46)? How can we learn to appreciate the difficult questions of unbelievers?
Listen to the sermon here.
- John was very selective about what he recorded (John 20:30-31, John 21:25). What patterns do you notice in the Gospel of John that unfold toward a developing knowledge and belief in Jesus?
- Signs are for the purpose of pointing to something greater. How was that seen throughout the Gospel of John? How was it missed?
- Read John 1:4, 4:14, 5:24, 10:10, 11:25, 14:6, and 17:3. How is this life described throughout John?
- How would you describe life in Jesus to an unbeliever? How does belief in Jesus lead to life?
- The Apostle John had a close friendship with Jesus, and was struck especially by Jesus’ love for him (John 13:23). How does that help perspective while reading the Gospel of John?
Listen to the sermon here.
- What miracle would you expect first? Why do you suppose Jesus’ first miracle is wine at a wedding?
- Jesus’ “hour” would show his glory through suffering and death (John 17:1, 12:27), but His miracle showed His glory also (John 2:11). How should we respond?
- Have you lost your joy over circumstances? What verses remind you instead to find unfading joy in who Jesus is?
- How is the joy that God gives better, deeper, and longer than any joy the world can offer (John 2:10)?
- Are there steps of obedience God wants you to take in order to see His power at work in your life (John 2:7-8)? What is keeping you from taking those steps?
Listen to the sermon here.
- What happened to gentle, humble Jesus (Matthew 11:29)? What surprises you about this story?
- Jesus is serious about reverent worship (John 2:17). In what ways do you fall short in honoring God?
- What areas of your life do you have subtle (or not-so-subtle) resistance to the Lord’s authority (John 2:18)?
- Jesus’ claim that He would raise the temple in three days stuck in everyone’s minds (John 2:22, Matthew 26:61, 27:40). How does His resurrection influence His authority in your daily life?
- The Lord knows our hearts better than we do ourselves (John 2:25). In what circumstances do you have a weak or superficial faith?
Listen to the sermon here.
- Are you reluctant to agree that you deserve eternal condemnation (John 3:18)? Is your sin really that bad?
- If a devout religious man like Nicodemus was excluded from God’s kingdom, what about you (John 3:3)? Why might religious people be lost?
- Jesus knew Nicodemus’ heart, and He knows ours (John 2:24-25). He has just the words we need to know and trust Him. How would Jesus confront your trust and obedience to Him?
- John 3:16 makes salvation sound easy. How does its context in this passage challenge us that we truly cannot depend on self, but instead need a Savior?
- Jesus died a criminal’s death (John 3:14), so that we could have eternal life (John 3:15). How does that amaze, humble, and transform you?
Listen to the sermon here.
- Like John the Baptist, we are merely witnesses of one far greater (John 1:28-29). What motivation do we have to continue humbly and faithfully?
- The alternative to joy offered in Jesus is wrath suffered apart from Him (John 3:36). Why would God pour out His wrath on those who don’t believe?
- In what ways are people competitive for attention or recognition (John 3:26)? How can we keep a perspective of contentment and joy?
- Would you still serve Jesus faithfully and joyfully if you never received earthly recognition for any of your contributions (John 1:27)?
- In what areas of your life do you need to pray, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30)? Is that a regular prayer and practice in your life?
Listen to the sermon here.
- What barriers or differences make it difficult or awkward to talk to certain people (John 4:9, 27)? How can we overcome those barriers?
- Perhaps you carry deep shame over hidden past or present sin in your life. In what way can we find great hope in knowing that Jesus knew this woman’s sin, yet spoke grace to her (John 4:14, 18)?
- What are some ways the world (and us) seek satisfaction? How is Jesus far more satisfying (John 4:14)?
- What does it look like to worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24)?
- Did the woman believe because her theological question was answered (John 4:20), or because she met Christ (John 4:29)? How does that encourage our witness?
Listen to the sermon here.
- Do you feel an urgency to share the gospel with the people God has placed in your life (John 4:28)? How would that shape your interactions with others?
- What apologetic training did the woman have? What did she tell them instead (John 4:29)? How does this encourage you in your witness?
- The disciples were concerned about food, but Jesus pointed to a greater nourishment (John 4:31-34). Why do we seek physical nourishment more readily than the spiritual nourishment of doing God’s will?
- Is there someone that you need to share the gospel with now? What hesitations do you have?
- Jesus said that there is a harvest ready (John 4:35), and then many believed in Jesus (John 4:39-42). Do you believe there is a harvest ready around us? What should we do?
Listen to the sermon here.
- Have you ever thought that you would trust God more if He did something specific for you? How does Jesus challenge this thinking in John 4:48?
- Do you have certain expectations of what ways God will help you in your need (John 4:49, 5:7)? Do you believe God can surprise you with a better answer or a better way?
- In what ways do we take for granted that God will help us because we have a “nearness” to Him (John 5:6)? How might we fall short in desire (John 5:6) or belief (John 4:48)?
- John writes about the progression of belief, including the official (John 4:50, 53). How are you still growing in your faith in Jesus?
- Jesus gives a stern warning to the healed invalid that worse things could happen if he persisted in sin (John 5:14). Do you believe the impact of sin is worse than long-term disability? Why?
- How does the authority of Jesus (John 5:27) affect the way you live each day?
- When we trust in Jesus, we have passed into life… already (John 5:24)! How is your spiritual life evident in your thoughts, words, and actions?
- What is the difference between the works Jesus does (John 5:36), and the wonders that others have done? Why can we trust Jesus?
- If we understand Jesus as a good person and a prophet, but not as God, how does that change our entire reading of Scripture (John 5:39)?
- The Old Testament testifies of Jesus (John 5:46). How can you see this in your regular Bible study? How is this a struggle?
