14- The law is spiritual, and I am of the flesh 15- I don’t do what I want.  I do what I hate. 17- No longer I, but sin dwelling in me.
18- Nothing good dwells in me. I have desire but not ability. 19- I don’t do the good I want.  I keep on doing the evil I don’t want. 20- No longer I, but sin dwelling in me.
21- When I want to do right, evil lies close! 22-23- I delight in God’s Law, but my body is waging war… 25- With my flesh I serve sin

We are hopeless wretches apart from God’s saving grace!

  1. Delight for righteousness …22

Desire – to have the purpose/intent of something because I want it
Believers struggle with a divided will and warring desires! (Galatians 5:16-17)
We don’t like rules… but they show us our struggles and God’s greater good!

  1. Hatred of sin 23-24, 15

Sin is waging war to take us captive!
We must feel the pain and anguish of sin because it separates us from God!
To justify and minimize sin is to overlook its magnitude and power!

  1. Rescue from Jesus 25a, 8:1

We are all one moment away from deep moral failure!
We need rebuke and correction but not condemnation.  Point to hope in Jesus!
As we fight this battle, we must keep turning to our new Master for help in failure… to get back up again!
