"My Story" Sermon Discussion

During our midweek Life Groups, we discuss applications of the sermon and pray for one another. Here you can find the discussion questions for our current series on evangelism. We are learning that each Christian has a story to tell about how they came to trust Jesus, and our testimony is a great way to share the gospel!

These questions coordinate with our sermon series from March 2020 to present: "My Story: Testimony of God's Grace".

Each week, we will start the discussion by asking,

How do you generally think about “open doors” (Colossians 4:3)? Does that merely refer to when someone asks “how can I be saved?” (Acts 16:30), or could it include effort to seek small openings?
Why is it hard to transition a conversation to a spiritual focus? How can we be intentional without being abrupt and awkward?
Consider the typical church and personal prayer. How often do we pray for the lost and for open doors (Colossians 4:3)? How can we be more faithful to do so?
We are always “on the clock” as Christians (Colossians 4:5). How does that further influence our calls to holiness and evangelism?
What are some important elements of empathetic and gracious conversation that can build bridges for the gospel (Colossians 4:6)?

It’s easy to broaden the application of loving our neighbors as referring to everyone (Luke 10:27). Why is it important to remember the more immediate context of those near us where we are?
One of the most valuable assets that everyone has is time (Ephesians 5:16). How can time be used to invest in others for the gospel?
One of our greatest obstacles that paralyzes and hinders evangelism is our busyness! What things in life seem urgent, but are less important?
What is the reality of those who don’t trust Jesus as Savior? How does this impact our perspective of the lost, and move us to respond?
Notice the irony that God’s people are the ones who neglect a person in need (Luke 10:31-32). The gospel is everyone’s greatest need! What if we only talk about evangelism but never take action?

What kinds of sacrifices might an investment in people’s lives to this extent entail?
Have you ever grown in affection for someone you were ministering to (1 Thessalonians 2:8)? Why might that happen?
What lessons can we learn from a gentle mother that can influence and shape our evangelism
(1 Thessalonians 2:7-8)?
What lessons can we learn from a lovingly rigorous father that can influence and shape our evangelism (1 Thessalonians 2:11-12)?
How does sharing ourselves (1 Thessalonians 2:8) open us to a vulnerability that enables us to demonstrate faith and grow together with others?

Is there anyone weighing on your heart because of their need for salvation? How do you cultivate and respond to that burden (Luke 15:4)?
God doesn’t need us to reach the lost, but He does use us! How can we grow in sharing in His desire (1 Timothy 2:4) and His joy (Luke 15:7)?
Is it really a good idea for us to bring messy sinners (Luke 15:2) into Grace Baptist Church? Is it worth the trouble and the work? Why?
Why is it hard to tell someone they need to repent (Luke 13:3)? How can we do so with love and urgency?
How can we go pursue the lost (Luke 15:4), rather than wait for them to come to us?
