"Take Heart" Sermon Discussion

During our Wednesday night gathering, we discuss applications of the sermon before spending time in prayer. Here you can find the discussion questions, with our most recent questions at the top.

These questions coordinate with our December 2018 sermon series, "Why Jesus Became Man."

Each week, we will start the discussion asking the following:

Does Jesus’ life on earth seem different than the God of the Old Testament? Why do you feel that way?
In God’s presence, there is fullness of joy. In what times/ways do you experience that joy? In what times/ways does that joy seem absent?
Have you had a time in your life when it seemed like God was silent? What did you do?
How does this passage help you when you feel like you are lacking direction in your life?
One repeated message at Christmas is, “Do not fear!” How does this passage help in your fears and anxieties?
Jesus is powerfully upholding the universe... actively interested and involved in our lives.
- Do you recognize God’s interest in your life in both joyful and difficult circumstances?
- How does this confront our times of prayerlessness?
- What hinders you from running to Him in prayer?

What does mercy and grace look like in the face of temptation?
Do you struggle to comprehend Jesus as High Priest? How does the Old Testament background enrich that meaning for you?
Do you struggle to grasp a Savior who identifies with your temptation?
How does the understanding that God knows our hearts confront you? How does it comfort you?
Jesus is actively interested and involved in our lives.
- How is this demonstrated through the living and active Word of God’s ministry in our lives?
- Can you recall a time when Scripture has powerfully confronted your sin, exposing you to yourself?
Are you ashamed of temptations you face? Does the Bible ever tie temptation with shame?
What lies do you struggle with when facing temptation?
How can we guard against a false confidence that misses our desperate need at all times?
Is God’s purpose in temptation merely that we escape?
Thoughtfully reflect and consider: how might the temptation itself be an expression of grace in your life?

What does true humility look like?
How does the struggle with humility relate to other emotions, such as anger, anxiety, sadness, envy, or fear?
What are some ways that humility can foster unity, joy, and satisfaction?
Consider someone you know who manifests humility well. How do they show humility? Are they more joyful or sorrowful?
What are some practical ways to count others as better than ourselves?
How does worship of and submission to Jesus grow our humility and satisfaction?
How can you catch pride in its tracks and remove it at its root?
